NATIONAL LIBRARIANS’ DAY CELEBRATION - 2021

Central Library , IIS (Deemed to be  University) celebrated National Librarians’ Day on 12 August, 2021 to commemorate the 129th birth anniversary of Padmashri Dr S. R. Ranganathan (1892-1972), who is considered as father of library science in India. Dr. Ranganathan dedicated his entire life to library profession in India leaving a rich legacy.

The occasion was graced in the presence of Vice Chancellor Dr. T.N. Mathur, Registrar Dr. Raakhi Gupta, Advisor Dr.K.S.Sharma, Deans, Library Committee Members and all the librarians of IIS Network. The guest of the occasion was Dr. Pawan Kumar Gupta, Former Director, Central Library, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur.

Dr. Sonal Jain, Librarian IISU welcomed all the members and informed that Ranganathan was born on 9 August 1892 in the small town of Shiyali (now known as Sirkazhi), in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India. He began his professional life as a mathematician; established himself as a successful teacher of mathematics at Universities in Mangalore, Coimbatore After joining as University Librarian he was possessed by a mission to modernize Indian librarianship, university libraries and library science education. He saw librarians not as curator of books but facilitator of their use for communication of information and creation of knowledge. To achieve this he worked at intellectual, administrative, political and social levels. The Government of India awarded Padmashri to Dr. S.R. Ranganathan for valuable contributions to Library Science.

The Vice Chancellor Dr. T.N. Mathur addressed about Ranganathan’s five laws and emphasized on Fifth law of library science “Library is a growing organism” which means that a library should be a dynamic institution that is never static in its outlook. Books, methods, and the physical library should be updated over time, talked about computerization and modernization of the libraries.

The guest, Dr P K Gupta emphasized on the relevance of Five Laws of Library Science given By Dr Ranganathan in today’s digital perspective. He also discussed about the qualities of Dr. S R Ranganathan, his achievements, honours, awards and his simplicity who gave a purpose, direction and mission to the profession of library science.

It was an interesting and informative session. All librarians of IIS Network paid homage and tribute to illustrious Guru Dr. S.R Ranganathan on this auspicious occasion.
